If you were anywhere near the Birmingham ICC on Friday, October 15th, then you may have seen Energym CEO, Will Flint, holding up a cut glass trophy like it was a little lion king, and he was a wise old monkey. Will accepted the trophy on behalf of the Energym team in front of five hundred and fifty attendees gathered at the ICC to celebrate the region’s burgeoning technology scene and to listen to the special guest speaker (and former Dragon’s Den investor) Piers Linney. There was fierce competition amongst the start-up nominees. Notably, because the West Midlands is the UK’s fastest-growing tech sector. And it’s such an awful cliché, but it really is an honour just to be nominated. Most companies will agree that it’s been a rough eighteen months. And trying to grow a tech company during a global pandemic (paired with a worldwide microchip shortage) was never going to be easy. Energym began the pandemic by marketing primarily to the commercial gym industry, but COVID-19 lockdowns meant a pivot towards the at-home gym market. And whilst this was a challenging period for the start-up, it helped drive the innovation and momentum that’s now evident in the RE:GEN – Energym’s clean-energy generating indoor bike.In June 2021, the company began accepting pre-orders using a crowd-funding platform. In October 2021, Energym moved to its own website, handling orders directly. With the gym industry now beginning its pandemic recovery, Energym continues to manage and grow the commercial side of its business alongside its domestic one. Speaking after the event, Will said, ‘Awards like this give us such a boost. There’s something about external recognition and knowing that our efforts aren’t going unnoticed. This award reaffirms our drive and focus; it’s massively gratifying for the entire team. Bring on 2022!’ The award comes just weeks after Will won Male Innovator of the Year. 2022 is on track to be another busy year for Energym. The RE:GEN will be delivered to its first domestic customers. The first in-gym installations will be taking place, too. 2022 will be a big year for human power, and one thing is for sure: Energym is unlikely to remain just a start-up for much longer.
