Most of us feel that we need to do more to protect the environment. You might already participate in behaviours that minimise your impact on the world around you: by taking public transport, recycling the plastic you use, opting for paperless bills, or driving an electric or hybrid car.You might also be part of a company or business with an environmental corporate social responsibility policy.

Consumers and customers now expect more from the products and services they use. You won't be surprised to hear that the fitness industry (like many other industries) is trying to reduce its carbon footprint. This is happening behind-the-scenes with office management and delivery as well as on the gym floor with equipment. Everything from bamboo yoga mats and sustainable gym flooring to electricity-generating indoor bikes are increasing in popularity. Social consciousness will likely influence the way people choose their gyms and their at-home equipment.

If you're making conscientious purchase decisions about the products and services, companies and campaigns you use, you're going to make more ethical fitness decisions, too.

We already know that younger people are willing to pay more in order to buy more socially responsible products.

If you own a gym, it's worth thinking about how clean-energy generating equipment could help your business. Because gym power doesn't only come from a wall socket, it can come from people, too.

Harnessing the human energy wasted during a workout can generate enough clean-electricity to power the gym's premises with excess energy going into the grid.

And don't worry, we're not advocating Matrix-style human battery farms. Gym users still get their regular workout but the energy they've exerted is converted into electricity.

Energym has partnered with Sweatcoin to incentivise clean-energy generation with rewards that can be purchased in an online marketplace. It's win-win for gym power: the user gets the workout they want and the chance to increase their fitness for tangible rewards whilst the gym owner gets a reduced electricity bill and fewer fossil fuels are burned.

When we workout we expend energy. At the moment, that energy is wasted; it doesn't do anything but what if there was a way to take that energy and send it to a centralised battery?

Aside from the fact that your business can tap into the energy generation that's already going on inside your building?

You can attract a more socially conscious demographic for membership and build a community around clean-energy generation.

It's easy to talk about the environmental benefits; they're obvious. We all know how bad fossil fuels are. No doubt you've heard about the importance of reducing your carbon footprint but as a business you may not be aware of the Government's 2040 commitment to becoming carbon-neutral.

2040 seems a long way off but it's better to get ahead of this rather than be broadsided by legislation closer to the date. We can expect a flurry of campaigns and incentives (and possible penalties) to encourage businesses to take up a cleaner approach to energy generation.

If you're not yet in a position to start a human-powered gym or to install sustainable gym equipment, there are still things you can do to make your business more eco-friendly. It's a tough economy (especially post-COVID), gym owners may not be able to invest in eco-friendly gym equipment or energy generating gym equipment right now.

But you shouldn't let short-termism stop you from growing your business, reducing your energy bills and reducing your carbon footprint. Power generating exercise equipment is the future of the gym, and we'd love to talk more about it with you.
