The UK’s wellness economy is worth £38.3 billion, the ‘second largest in Europe’ and the fifth largest globally.

The Global Wellness Economy report shows that the sector has not only recovered from the COVID-19 pandemic but surpassed pre-pandemic levels, growing by 18% Health Club Management writes that the UK is a global growth leader with A 19.4 per cent annual growth.  ‘The UK wellness market grew faster than any other top 10 market’, including the US, China, and Germany.

The report defines the wellness economy as ‘industries that enable consumers to incorporate wellness activities and lifestyles into their daily lives’. It currently puts the global wellness market in 2022 as worth $5.6 trillion. Physical activity accounts for $976 billion, mental wellness for $181 billion, and workplace wellness for $51 billion.

From an Energym perspective, with products in the at-home exercise, gym and corporate wellness markets, it paints a promising and interesting picture, especially as the UK currently outperforms countries with significantly higher populations.  The UK ranked 5th globally out of 218 countries and second within Europe.

For the study, the UK’s wellness economy was broken into 11 sectors:

  • physical activity
  • healthy eating
  • nutrition and weight loss
  • mental wellness
  • workplace wellness
  • public health
  • prevention & personalised medicine
  • traditional & complementary medicine
  • personal care & beauty
  • wellness tourism
  • spas
  • thermal or mineral springs

The booming wellness economy in the UK is great news for gyms. It shows there’s a real appetite for physical and mental wellness. Individuals are now looking to take control of their own wellbeing, whether that’s to improve their general health and quality of life or to target a specific wellness issue, using preventive rather than reactive measures.

It’s also great news for companies like Energym, which operate within several key wellness sectors for gyms, homes, and workplaces. You can now signup to be notified when our electricity-generating RE:GEN indoor bike is available to pre-order.
